<image:caption>A volunteer instructor teaching a new climber how to belay from above— directly off their harness with no rope redirect, and with an ATC using the slip, slap, slide belay method. This method of belaying exposes the climber to a high risk of being dropped as the break side of the rope is often not in the breaking plane. Additionally, the belayer in this situation is not braced correctly to hold an unplanned fall. The volunteer instructor is “backing up” the student’s belay but they are also not braced to hold an unplanned fall.</image:caption>
